Vodafone brings programmable 4G and 5G connection profiles to Germany
Vodafone has launched its Quality on Demand network API in Germany, allowing businesses and developers to select predefined mobile-network profiles with chosen bandwidth and usage duration.
Vodafone launched its Quality on Demand network API in Germany on September 7. The service gives businesses and developers a way to adjust selected parameters on Vodafone’s 4G and 5G networks, with Germany becoming the first market to receive it. Vodafone says other countries will follow
A network profile that services can request
Quality on Demand uses a simple, secure interface to Vodafone’s mobile networks. Third-party users can dynamically select a predefined profile containing specific network parameters, then choose the bandwidth they need and the corresponding duration of use.
This is aimed at organizations and developers building services for mobile users, rather than individual smartphone owners changing a setting on their handsets. The API makes connection quality part of a service’s operation: a selected profile can be matched to a particular task and time period.
Vodafone lists entertainment, transport systems, emergency situations and remote maintenance among the possible applications. That also defines the immediate limitation of the launch. It does not change every mobile connection on the network; its effect depends on services being built to use the interface and on organizations selecting it for a specific need.
The first example focuses on live football coverage
Vodafone is working with other industry participants on a proof of concept with a German broadcaster during a football match. In this setup, the broadcaster can support push-to-talk communications between the production team and receive video sequences over the network.
The example shows how Quality on Demand is intended to support coordinated, time-sensitive operations. It does not establish a general performance result for all customers or prove that every service using the API will receive the same outcome. The profile, bandwidth and duration are selected for the use case rather than applied as a universal network setting.
Germany is the starting point for a broader API strategy
Vodafone says it joined the GSMA Open Gateway initiative with other mobile operators in 2024. The initiative is intended to give developers, businesses and cloud providers access to mobile-network interfaces.
Vodafone’s network API portfolio also includes SIM Swap and Number Verify, which contribute to the fight against online fraud. Quality on Demand therefore arrives alongside APIs serving other network-related functions, while addressing the way mobile services request connection profiles.
The service complements Vodafone’s dedicated 5G network slices and private networks by giving customers another way to improve connection quality. The common industry standard used by the API is designed to help customers scale the service globally. Germany is still the only launch market identified in the announcement, however, and no timetable is given for the next countries.
For smartphone users, the change will be indirect at first. The launch creates an option for apps and services whose developers integrate Vodafone’s API; it does not add a new handset setting or automatically upgrade every connection. Its wider impact will depend on those integrations and on future market launches.
Vodafone is turning a defined part of network performance into a programmable service for organizations. In Germany, the practical offer is clear: select a predefined profile, specify bandwidth and set how long it should be used. What remains open is how quickly developers adopt it and when the service expands beyond its first market.
