Apple's App Store update puts discovery, subscriptions and screen-time tools in focus

Apple is expanding the App Store with richer app listings, personalized discovery, multi-user subscription options and new controls for how children spend time in apps.

Apple used its June 8, 2026 developer update to outline a broad set of App Store changes arriving across discovery, marketing, subscriptions and parental controls. The announcement is aimed primarily at developers, but several of the changes will be visible to people who download apps on an iPhone or iPad.

The update matters because it touches both sides of the storefront. Apple is giving developers more ways to present an app and manage a business, while changing how users encounter recommendations and how families set boundaries around app use. The rollout is staged, so the announcement should not be read as a promise that every feature is available in every market today.

App pages are getting more room to explain themselves

Apple says developers will be able to use new Creative Assets, including richer images and videos, in the header of an App Store product page and in search results. These assets sit alongside the screenshots and previews developers already use. They can be adapted for custom product pages and product page optimization, giving teams more ways to test how an app is presented.

Apple is also adding a preview in App Store Connect so developers can check how descriptions, screenshots and Creative Assets appear on iPhone and iPad. The preview covers different languages, Dark Mode, and portrait or landscape layouts. A new Asset Library is intended to keep these files in one place, with reuse across custom product pages and In-App Events. Apple says assets can be sent for App Review separately from an app update, which should make seasonal changes less dependent on a new binary release.

Recommendations become more personal

The user-facing change is a new discovery layer built around Personalized Collections and App Notes. Personalized Collections are based on user interests, while App Notes explain why a particular app is being recommended. Apple says these recommendations can appear on the Apps, Games and Search tabs and can evolve with a person's app usage and downloads.

At announcement, Apple said Personalized Collections and App Notes would begin rolling out that week in English in the United States, with more languages and regions to follow. That qualification is important: a feature appearing in Apple's plan is not the same as a confirmed global release. Users in other markets may see a different storefront experience until Apple extends the rollout.

Apple is also opening a new promotional route for game publishers in the Apple Games app. Through Featuring Nominations, developers can propose plans for an in-game offer or a limited-time discount to Apple's editorial team. The tool gives publishers a formal way to request visibility, but it does not guarantee that an offer will be featured.

Subscriptions move beyond one-person accounts

Apple's most structural change is in Apple In-App Purchase. Built on StoreKit 2, the new options are designed for subscriptions used by groups and organizations rather than one account at a time. Volume purchasing through Apple Business and Apple School Manager is intended for enterprise and education buyers, with seat assignments managed through existing device-management workflows.

Group purchases take a different approach. A subscriber can buy several seats as one purchase and invite other people to join. Each person uses their own account, allowing the purchaser to see and manage who belongs to the group. Apple says developers will configure both models in App Store Connect. Its published timetable placed volume purchasing in the fall and group purchases in the winter, so availability should be checked against Apple's current developer documentation before a team changes its billing design.

Apple is also introducing App Store Bundles and Suites for subscription packages that can combine offerings from multiple developers or present a package that is not sold separately. Retention Messaging is rolling out to all developers in App Store Connect, letting them present tailored value or special offers during cancellation. These tools give developers more levers, but they also make it more important for users to inspect renewal terms and which account controls a shared subscription.

New time controls connect the store to family settings

The update also links App Store metadata with new Time Allowances in iOS 27, iPadOS 27 and macOS 27. Apple says parents will be able to manage time spent in categories such as Entertainment, Games and Social Media, and create schedules for when selected apps are available. The limits remain adjustable by the parent; Apple describes the age-based defaults as a starting point rather than a fixed rule.

To support that system, Apple said the App Store age-rating questionnaire would be updated in July so developers could identify social-media capabilities such as interaction with a user-generated-content feed. Apps would then be grouped into Social Media, Entertainment, Games or Other for Time Allowances. The practical result is that accurate app classification becomes part of the family-safety experience, not just a store listing detail.

What to watch next

Apple's announcement is less a single storefront redesign than a set of connected changes. Discovery is becoming more contextual, developers are getting more flexible subscription structures, and family controls depend on cleaner app metadata. The trade-off is a more variable experience: features can differ by country, language, device, account type and developer support.

For users, the useful checks are simple. Look for the explanation attached to a recommendation, review the account and renewal details before joining a shared plan, and confirm that family schedules reflect the categories that matter in your household. For developers, the relevant work is to confirm regional availability, prepare approved creative assets, and test subscription and age-rating behavior before announcing a rollout.
