Snap Sets September 16 Date for SPECS AR Glasses Reveal
Snap will unveil its new SPECS augmented reality glasses on September 16, promising a closer look at AI assistance, work tools and shared experiences.

Snap has set September 16 as the date for the first in-depth presentation of SPECS, its new augmented reality glasses. The company announced the event on July 30, positioning the product as an attempt to make everyday computing feel more natural and less tied to a conventional screen.
According to Snap's official announcement, the event will take place in Los Angeles on Wednesday, September 16, at 4:00 p.m. Pacific Time. Snap co-founder and chief executive Evan Spiegel is expected to lead the presentation, which will also bring together industry leaders, partners, developers and creators.
A reveal rather than a retail launch
The wording of the announcement is important. Snap describes SPECS as a new pair of augmented reality glasses and says the September event will provide the first detailed look at the product. It does not present the announcement as a general sales launch, and it does not publish a price, consumer shipping date or retail availability plan.
That makes September 16 a product reveal to watch, rather than a confirmed purchase opportunity. Until Snap shares more information, questions about hardware, software, compatibility and regional availability remain open.
What Snap says SPECS will do
Snap says SPECS will bring AI assistance, work tools, entertainment and shared experiences into the user's surroundings. The company's stated aim is to help people create, connect, learn and complete tasks while staying present in the physical world.
This description places SPECS closer to a wearable computing platform than a simple camera accessory. The emphasis is on interacting with information and other people without constantly looking down at a phone. That is Snap's product positioning, however, not an independently verified performance claim: the company has not yet published detailed demonstrations, technical specifications or hands-on results in the announcement.
Why the announcement matters to mobile users
For smartphone users, the significance of SPECS will depend on how the glasses connect to the services they already use. A useful augmented reality device needs more than a display: it must handle notifications, voice or gesture input, communications, media and privacy in a way that complements a phone rather than creating another complicated device to manage.
The announcement points to a wider ecosystem by naming developers and creators among the people invited to experience SPECS. That could become important if Snap supports applications and experiences that extend beyond Snapchat. At this stage, the company has not explained how developers will build for the glasses, whether a companion phone is required, or which operating systems and devices will be supported.
The details to watch on September 16
The event should clarify the practical questions that matter most. Viewers will want to see how information appears in the user's field of view, how people interact with the glasses, and how the device handles notifications and calls without becoming distracting. Battery life, weight, audio, camera capabilities and privacy controls will also determine whether SPECS feels ready for daily use.
Software support may be just as important as the hardware. Snap's description includes AI, work and entertainment, but it does not yet explain which features will be available at launch, which will require a connected phone or account, or whether the glasses will work across different markets. Those answers will help distinguish a demonstrated concept from a product that can fit into ordinary mobile routines.
Snap is inviting viewers to register for the livestream through specs.com/launch. The company says the event will also give partners, developers and creators an opportunity to experience SPECS hands-on. That should provide the first public evidence of how the glasses work beyond the broad product description.
For now, the confirmed news is straightforward: Snap will present SPECS in Los Angeles on September 16, with Spiegel leading the first detailed showcase. The announcement establishes the date and the product's broad ambition, but leaves price, availability, specifications and real-world performance for the event itself.
