Snapchat’s Place Loyalty Turns Snap Map Visits Into Private Milestones
Snapchat is adding private visit rankings to Snap Map, giving users a way to see which cafés, restaurants and other places they visit most often without publishing their precise location.

Snapchat is turning location history into a private social feature. In an announcement dated April 22, 2026, the company introduced Place Loyalty, a new addition to Snap Map that shows users when they rank among the most frequent visitors to a place over the previous year.
The feature is designed around familiar routines rather than one-off check-ins. A regular coffee shop, favourite restaurant or frequently used airport can now become part of a personal Snap Map record. Snapchat says Place Loyalty is launching for its global community, although the company does not describe it as a public leaderboard.
How the rankings work
Place Loyalty uses visit frequency to identify whether a user is among the top 25% of Snapchatters visiting a location. Snapchat has divided the result into three tiers: Gold for the top 1%, Silver for the top 10% and Bronze for the top 25%.
When a user qualifies, a “Top Visitor” badge can appear on a location in Snap Map. Tapping the badge reveals the user’s ranking, category callouts and a shareable sticker. Snapchat also says visits are aggregated across different branches of brands and chains, so repeated visits to multiple locations can contribute to the same overall result.
The approach gives Snap Map a new layer beyond finding friends or browsing local activity. Instead of treating location as a temporary piece of context, Place Loyalty turns repeated movement into a personal pattern that users can inspect when they want to.
A private feature built on location data
Privacy is the most important qualification around the announcement. Snapchat says Snap Map location sharing is off by default and that users can choose which friends, if any, can see their location. Place Loyalty rankings are visible only to the individual user, while Snapchat says precise location data is not shared with advertisers.
Users can also keep location sharing disabled, enable Ghost Mode or select specific friends. That means Place Loyalty does not require a user to make their visit history public. The feature is therefore closer to a private personal statistic than a conventional social ranking.
That distinction matters because location-based features can easily create pressure to disclose routines. A badge showing that someone is a frequent visitor to a venue may feel harmless when viewed privately, but the same information could become sensitive if shared without care. Snapchat’s design keeps the ranking private by default, while allowing the user to decide whether a sticker or status is worth sharing.
What Snap Map is becoming
Snapchat says Snap Map has more than 435 million monthly active users who use it to connect with friends and explore what is happening around them. Place Loyalty extends that existing behaviour into a feature focused on familiarity: the places users return to, not only the places they are visiting today.
For Snapchat, this also creates a bridge between personal activity and local discovery. A user may open Snap Map to check a friend’s location, discover a popular venue or browse what is happening nearby, then notice a Top Visitor badge attached to a familiar place. The feature gives the map a more persistent memory without requiring users to post a public review or maintain a visible travel diary.
There is also a clear difference between Place Loyalty and a recommendation ranking. Snapchat does not say that Gold, Silver or Bronze status indicates that a venue is better than another one. It only measures how frequently the user visits compared with other Snapchatters who visit that place. A high ranking is a reflection of behaviour, not an endorsement or an objective assessment of the business.
Why the feature may appeal to users
Place Loyalty is a small change, but it fits the way many people already use mobile maps and social apps. It gives regular routines a visible shape and can turn an ordinary habit into something users can compare with friends. The shareable sticker adds a lightweight way to celebrate a favourite place without publishing a full location trail.
The feature could also encourage users to explore Snap Map more often. A badge provides a reason to revisit locations, while the cross-location aggregation for chains gives frequent travellers a broader view of their habits. At the same time, the feature’s value depends on the privacy controls remaining clear and easy to use.
Snapchat’s announcement presents Place Loyalty as a celebration of the places people visit with friends. Its practical significance is more specific: it makes a private, visit-based layer of Snap Map visible to the person whose location history generated it. Whether users treat that layer as a curiosity, a conversation starter or a reason to share a badge, the company is positioning Snap Map as more than a live map. It is becoming a record of how people move through familiar places.
