Telegram expands to Apple Watch and Wear OS, adds AI group guardians

Telegram is taking its messaging app beyond the phone. In an update announced on June 11, 2026, the company introduced dedicated apps for Apple Watch and Android smartwatches running Wear OS, alongside richer bot messages, AI-powered screening tools for groups and several smaller changes to the way links and polls work. The details come from Telegram's official announcement; the company describes the release as a broad update with dozens of features and improvements.
Telegram arrives on both wrists
The headline change is support for Telegram on Apple Watch and Wear OS. According to Telegram, the watch apps let users browse chats and media, read messages of any length, listen to voice messages, watch video messages and send text or voice messages. They can also send stickers, preview locations and manage chats. That gives the service a more complete watch-based messaging experience than a simple notification mirror, at least in the feature list Telegram published.
There is an important qualification: Telegram does not present the two watch apps as identical. The company says the Android version adds tools to mute and pin chats and delete messages, while the iOS version supports viewing locations and sending stickers. Telegram says it intends to bring those features across in a future update. It also specifically invites Huawei watch users who cannot run the Wear OS app to request a dedicated app, so support is not universal across every smartwatch platform.
The practical appeal is straightforward. A user can check a long message, hear a voice note or send a quick reply without taking a phone out of a pocket or bag. The announcement does not give a separate release timetable, minimum watch requirements or a complete compatibility matrix, so the available experience may depend on the operating system and the version distributed to a particular device.
Bot replies become much more like documents
Telegram is also expanding the presentation options available to bots. Bot messages can now use rich formatting that includes headings and anchors, tables, nested blockquotes, collapsible sections, footnotes, mathematical formulas, checklists and inline media. Telegram says bots can place as many as 32,768 characters in one message, with a “Show More” control after roughly the first 8,000 characters.
That change matters most for services that use Telegram as an interface rather than merely as a notification channel. A support bot could structure a long answer, a productivity bot could return a checklist, and an information bot could combine text with tables or images. Those are examples of how the announced formatting tools could be used, not features Telegram promises for any particular third-party bot. AI bots can screen group join requests
For group administrators, the most consequential addition may be AI Guardian Bots. Telegram says administrators can add AI bots to process join requests before people enter a group. The bots can use flexible mini-app interfaces to screen applicants, and Telegram also says they can act on posts in the chat when configured.
This turns a bot from a reactive helper into a gatekeeper. It could reduce the manual work involved in reviewing a busy community, but it also makes the bot's permissions and screening rules important. Group owners should treat an AI guardian as an administrator with meaningful access: review exactly which rights it receives, understand what questions or signals it uses, and keep a human route available for legitimate applicants who are rejected. Those are operational precautions, not claims that Telegram has published a particular moderation standard.
Smaller changes improve the mobile workflow
The update adds links to poll options, allowing a choice to carry supporting context directly to a webpage or another destination. Telegram's in-app browser can now render Markdown files in the .md format instead of showing them only as raw text. Users can also long-press an external link to choose a browser other than the default, and Telegram says both Android and iOS can be configured to always open or never open selected sites in the Telegram Browser.
Telegram lists the relevant paths as Settings > Chat Settings > In-App Browser on Android and Settings > Privacy and Security > Open Links on iOS. That is a useful distinction for users who want to control where links open, especially when a work, banking or password-manager link should stay in a familiar browser. The announcement says Telegram's Browser does not store browsing history, but users should still verify the destination and avoid entering sensitive information into an unfamiliar page.
Taken together, the June update is less about one headline redesign than about extending Telegram into more surfaces. Watches handle quick reading and replies, richer bot messages make automated services more capable, and AI guardians give group owners a new way to manage entry. The trade-off is that each layer adds another set of permissions or choices to understand. Telegram has published the capabilities and configuration paths, while platform parity and the exact behavior of individual bots remain matters for users and developers to check in practice.
